Vero Beach beaches: choosing a shore
Vero Beach beaches face the Atlantic, with public parks along Ocean Drive and another coastal access at Round Island. Humiston, Jaycee and South Beach are city parks; Round Island Oceanside is a county park farther south. Compare the facilities and check current access before deciding where to spend your time.
Conditions on the sand and in the surf are separate questions. A parking area or open beach access does not mean the water is safe. Look for current warnings, speak with a lifeguard when one is on duty and make a fresh decision when you arrive. Lifeguard hours at city ocean parks vary.
Humiston, Jaycee and South Beach
Humiston Beach Park at 3000 Ocean Drive has beach access, parking, accessible facilities, restrooms, a playground and picnic facilities. Jaycee Beach Park at 4200 Ocean Drive also has parking and beach access. Both list lifeguards, though the hours can vary.
South Beach at 1704 Ocean Drive is another choice along the ocean. The city's 2026 recreation guide lists a boardwalk, restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic and grill facilities, volleyball and a beach wheelchair. Check availability and local conditions before relying on a particular amenity. Each park gives you a different starting point for the same Atlantic shore.

Round Island and the barrier island
Round Island Oceanside at 2201 South Highway A1A has restrooms, showers, picnic shelters, a playground and accessible beach access. The county lists free parking and does not allow pets at this park. Check its current operating information and whether lifeguards are present on your chosen day.
In the county update of 30 October 2026 at 3 p.m., Oceanside was open. Riverside had a closed mangrove boardwalk and T-dock, and higher water at boat ramps. The same update listed Ambersands and Turtle Trail as closed and the Wabasso beach access as closed, while its park gate and restrooms were open. These are dated conditions; check a fresh update before travelling.

Surf and rip current safety
On 1 November 2026 at 1:39 a.m. EST, the National Weather Service warned of high surf until 2 November at 7 p.m. EST and a high rip current risk through late in the night of 4 November. It advised staying out of the surf. Check current weather and beach warnings for the day of your visit rather than treating this dated warning as a permanent condition.
When swimming is appropriate, choose an area near an active lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, do not fight it directly: float and, if possible, swim along the shore out of the current. Call or wave for help if needed. The weather guide explains climate separately from the day's surf.
Sea turtles and lighting rules
Indian River County identifies 1 March to 31 October as sea turtle nesting season. Loggerheads, green turtles and leatherbacks nest along this coast. Sightings and nest locations are unpredictable, and animals and nests must not be disturbed outside the season either.
The county asks beachgoers to remain at least 50 feet from nesting turtles and hatchlings, avoid approaching them, and avoid flash photography and flashlights. Close curtains and turn off unnecessary outdoor lights. Local lighting ordinances differ, so check the rules for your municipality and accommodation rather than assuming any handheld light is permitted.
For a change of landscape, the Indian River Lagoon lies behind the barrier island. The attractions guide brings together gardens and art, while seasonal planning helps you match activities to your trip.
